Commercial Ice Machine Not Making Ice: Causes and What to Check First
The short answer
A commercial ice machine that stops making ice, or makes far less than usual, usually has a water supply problem, a clogged filter, scale on the evaporator, a dirty condenser, or a bin control that thinks the bin is full. What to check first
Water to the machine
Is the supply valve open? Has the filter been changed on schedule?
Power and switch
Many machines have an ice/off/clean switch. Check it is on ice.
Bin control
Ice touching the bin sensor, or a dirty sensor, tells the machine the bin is full.
Condenser and room
A dusty condenser or a hot, closed room cuts ice production.

Common causes
Water supply and filter
A closed valve, a kinked line, low water pressure or a clogged filter cartridge starve the machine. A water inlet valve can also fail.
Scale and slime

Heat
A dirty air-cooled condenser, a machine boxed into a hot room or next to cooking equipment, or a failed condenser fan.
Bin control
A sensor or curtain switch that is dirty, stuck or out of adjustment stops the machine as if the bin were full.

A harvest valve, a water pump, a float or probe, a control board, or a refrigerant problem. These need a technician to test.

- Confirm the machine is switched to ice and has power.
- Open the water supply valve fully and check the filter date.
- Clear ice away from the bin sensor and wipe it clean.
- Clear space around the machine and vacuum dust from the condenser with the power off.
- Write down any light, code or blinking pattern on the control.

If the machine still does not make ice, runs but the ice will not drop, leaks, or shows a fault light, it needs testing.
