Walk-In Freezer Frost Buildup: Why Ice Forms and How to Stop It

Where is the ice?

Door seal
Close the door on a sheet of paper; if it slides out, the gasket is leaking.
Defrost

Where frost comes from
Around the door

On the evaporator coil
The defrost heaters, the timer or control, the termination switch or a fan delay. When defrost does not finish, ice grows each cycle until air cannot pass and the box warms up.
On the floor and the drain pan
The drain line heater fails or the line is pitched wrong, so defrost water freezes in the pan or the line and overflows.
On walls, ceiling and product
Heavy door traffic, doors propped open during deliveries, warm product loaded all at once, or a crack in a panel seam.

Keep frost under control
- Keep the door closed; use strip curtains and keep them complete.
- Stage deliveries so the door is not open for long periods.
- Never chip ice off the coil with a tool: it punctures the tubing.
- Have the defrost system, drain heater and gaskets checked on a maintenance plan.
