What is your walk-in doing?

Pick what you see. You will get the usual causes, where a technician looks, and a quiz that starts from your answer.

What is your walk-in doing?

A dirty condenser outside, an evaporator fan that stopped, ice blocking the evaporator, or a door that lets warm air in. A refrigerant leak is less common and is tested, not guessed.

Where we look: condenser coil and fan, evaporator fans, defrost, door gasket and closer, pressures.

In a freezer, ice on the coil usually means the defrost is not finishing: a heater, the timer or board, or a sensor. Ice on the floor or the door frame often means the door is not sealing or its heater stopped.

Where we look: defrost heaters and controls, door gasket, frame heater, drain line heater.

Get help with this

A clogged or frozen drain line is the classic cause, followed by a cracked drain pan or a line that lost its heater.

Where we look: drain line, drain pan, line heater and trap.

Power and controls first: a tripped breaker, a contactor, a thermostat or a control board. Then the compressor and what starts it.

Where we look: power, controls, contactor, start components and compressor.

Get help with this

A fan blade hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or pressure and control problems that make the compressor start and stop too often.

Where we look: fans, pressure controls, compressor start and run.

Before you ask

Why is my walk-in cooler running warm?

The usual causes are a dirty condenser coil, a stopped evaporator fan, ice on the evaporator from a defrost problem, a door that does not seal, or a refrigerant leak. A technician tests each one on site before recommending a repair.

What causes ice to build up in a walk-in freezer?

Most often the defrost cycle is not finishing (a heater, the timer or board, or a sensor), or warm, humid air is getting in through a door that does not seal.

Can a walk-in door cause temperature problems?

Yes. A torn gasket, a door that does not close on its own or a frame heater that stopped can let warm air in, build ice and make the system run longer.

How much does a walk-in repair cost?

It depends on the cause and the part. The diagnostic visit has a set price, and the repair is quoted in writing after a technician tests the system.

What should I do until the visit?

Keep the door closed, move product that can spoil to a unit that is holding temperature and write down the readings you see. Keep the floor dry if there is water.

Do you clean walk-in coils?

Yes. Coil cleaning has its own page, and regular cleaning is one of the simplest ways to keep a walk-in holding temperature.
