What’s your fridge doing?

Pick what you see. You’ll get the usual causes, where a technician looks, and a quiz that starts from your answer.

What’s your fridge doing?

Usually airflow: frost on the evaporator from a defrost fault, a fan that stopped, or a dusty condenser. Less often, the compressor or the board that drives it.

Where we look: fans, defrost heater and sensor, condenser coils, compressor and control board.

Frost on the back wall points to the defrost system. Soft food can also be a door seal that no longer seals, a fan or a temperature sensor.

Where we look: defrost heater, thermostat and control, door gasket, evaporator fan.

Most often no water is reaching it (filter, valve or low pressure), the fill tube froze, or the ice box isn’t cold enough. The ice maker itself fails less often than people think.

Where we look: water valve, filter, fill tube, ice box fan and seal.

A blocked defrost drain is the classic cause. A cracked supply line, a leaking valve or a dispenser line that froze and thawed can do it too.

Where we look: defrost drain, drain pan, water line and inlet valve.

A fan blade hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor that clicks on and off without starting.

Where we look: evaporator and condenser fans, start relay, compressor.

On digital models the display reports a fault, like Er FF on some LG units or 22E on some Samsung units. The code points to a circuit; the part still has to be tested.

Where we look: the code, the part it points to and the wiring around it.

Every major brand, in your kitchen

Tap a brand to see what usually goes wrong with it.

Gesser Services is an independent service company and is not affiliated with these manufacturers. Brand names and logos belong to their owners.

Pick a brand above to read its common issues.

LG Many models use a linear or inverter compressor run by a control board and make ice in the door. Cooling faults, ice building up in the door and Er codes are common calls.

Samsung French-door models keep the ice maker in an insulated box in the fresh-food section. Frost in that box, fan noise and codes like 22E or 33E come up often.

Whirlpool Most calls come down to the defrost system, with frost on the freezer wall, or to the water valve that feeds the ice maker.

Frigidaire Evaporator fan faults (SY EF on the display), clogged defrost drains and ice makers in the door are what we see most.

GE A stopped condenser fan, dusty coils and control boards after a power surge come up often, along with door dispensers.

GE Profile Profile models add electronics: in-door ice and water, digital controls and fault codes on the display.

GE Café Café models share much with Profile: in-door ice, dispensers and electronic controls that report faults.

KitchenAid Often counter-depth or built-in. Ice makers in the fresh-food section, door closers and dusty condensers are common.

Sub-Zero Built-in units, many with two separate sealed systems. A clogged condenser behind the top grille is a frequent cause of warm temperatures.

Thermador Built-in and column refrigerators. We check airflow, the condenser and the electronic controls, with care around the cabinetry.

Viking High-end built-in units. Warm sections, ice maker faults and condenser cleaning are typical calls.

Bosch Counter-depth and built-in models with electronic controls. We test sensors, fans and the defrost system before recommending any part.

Miele Built-in column refrigerators with precise electronic controls. We read the fault on the display and test the part it points to.

Kenmore Made over the years by several manufacturers. The model number tells us which design it shares, and that guides the diagnosis.

Maytag Shares many parts with Whirlpool: defrost faults, ice maker water valves and evaporator fans are common.

Electrolux Related to Frigidaire. Ice makers, evaporator fans and electronic controls are what we check most.

Fisher & Paykel Many models are integrated or counter-depth with electronic controls. We test sensors, fans and the defrost system.

Amana A simpler design shared with other brands in its family: defrost and fan problems are what we see most.

Haier Compact and French-door models. Cooling faults, door seals and ice makers are typical calls.

Hisense Newer French-door and compact models with electronic controls, and inverter compressors on some units.

Beko European-style bottom-freezer and counter-depth models. We check fans, sensors and the defrost system.

Jenn-Air Built-in and French-door models. Ice makers, door closures and electronic controls come up often.

Monogram A built-in line from GE. Built-in service needs care around panels; we check the condenser, fans and controls.

Don’t see your brand? We work on all of them.

Modern refrigerators, tested properly

  • Digital displays and error codes

We read the fault your display shows and test the part it points to.

  • Inverter and linear compressors

Variable-speed compressors run by a control board. We test both before blaming either.

  • Smart and Wi-Fi models

A connected refrigerator still cools the old way. We diagnose the cooling, not just the app.

  • Built-in and panel-ready

Units built into the cabinets, handled with care for panels, trim and flooring.

  • In-door ice and ice rooms

Ice makers in the door or the fresh-food section, where seals and fans matter most.

  • Water dispensers and filters

Slow or stopped water: filters, valves and frozen lines.

  • Inverter control board inside a refrigerator's control box
  • Refrigerator control board opened for testing during a diagnosis
  • Samsung refrigerator control boards on the back panel
  • Main control board and wiring behind a refrigerator's rear cover

Before you ask

How much is the visit?

The diagnostic visit is $150. It covers the visit and the diagnosis, and it is a separate charge from any repair: it is not deducted from the repair.

Can you give me a repair price by phone?

No. A repair is quoted in writing after a technician tests the refrigerator. You decide before any work starts.

Do you work on my brand?

We work on all major brands, from LG, Samsung, Whirlpool and GE to built-in Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking units, including newer digital and inverter models.

Is it worth repairing?

Often, yes. After the diagnosis you get the cause and a written quote, so you can compare repairing it with replacing it.

What should I do until the visit?

Keep the doors closed as much as you can and move food that can spoil to a cooler. If water is leaking, wipe it up and turn off the water line to the refrigerator if you can reach it.

Do you also repair commercial refrigeration?

Yes. Walk-ins, reach-ins and ice machines for restaurants are a separate service. Call us and tell us what equipment you have.
